TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, has confirmed that the perpetrator of the explosion at SMAN 72 (high school) Jakarta, in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, is a 17-year-old student. "The preliminary information comes from the school environment. Yes (student)," Listyo said at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Friday, November 7, 2025.

However, Listyo did not disclose whether the perpetrator is a student of SMAN 72. He stated that the perpetrator is currently in police custody and his subordinates are investigating the identity, environment, and place of residence of the perpetrator.

As for the motive of the attack, Listyo stated that the police are still investigating. To date, the police have not confirmed the motive of the perpetrator.

In addition, Listyo mentioned that his subordinates found a toy weapon with specific writing. He stated that the police will investigate whether the writing on the toy weapon is related to the perpetrator's motive.

"We are examining the motive of the person involved in assembling and carrying out the action, and we will explain everything after all the information, findings in the field, and further investigations are complete," he said.

Previously, when asked if the suspected perpetrator in this incident had been found, Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri refused to comment extensively. "I will check the field later," he said.

Asep said that his team conducted sterilization and exploration at the explosion site. The team's findings will be compiled and presented to the public.

"My personnel have conducted sterilization, and the bomb squad is at the scene. Some of my personnel are in the field. We will have a meeting first. The results of the meeting will be conveyed to everyone," said the police chief.

At the explosion site, improvised explosive devices (homemade bomb), a remote control, long-barreled airsoft guns, and a revolver-type pistol were found. In response to this discovery, the Head of Public Relations Division of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Grand Commissioner Budhi Hermanto, admitted that he has not yet received the information. "Still being investigated," said Budi.

The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Lodewijk Friedrich Paulus, stated that there were no fatalities as a result of the explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta. "There were no fatalities, thank God," Lodewijk said after inspecting the explosion site on Friday, November 7, 2025.

However, according to the data, 20 SMAN 72 Jakarta students were injured in this incident. The victims have been evacuated to hospitals for medical treatment. Of the 20 victims, 17 suffered injuries as a result of the explosion. "Meanwhile, 3 people sustained serious injuries," said the Golkar Party politician.
