TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police have finally determined the source of the Glodok Plaza fire in Tamansari, West Jakarta, which occurred on Wednesday night, January 15, 2025, after a thorough investigation. Head of the West Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Adj. Sr. Comr. Arfan Zulkan Sipayung, revealed that the National Police Forensic Laboratory (Puslabfor) concluded the fire started due to an electrical short circuit behind a videotron.

"The Puslabfor has released the result. The cause [of the fire] is an electrical short circuit behind a videotron," Arfan told Tempo on Friday, February 21.

He explained that although the videotron was turned off, electrical cables were present behind it. Furthermore, a large electrical panel was located nearby on the 9th floor.

He detailed that sparks from the short circuit ignited the electrical panel. "There were electrical cables behind it (the videotron), but they're not cables of the videotron. The videotron was not in use," Arfan clarified.

To date, the police have questioned 42 witnesses regarding the Glodok Plaza fire. These witnesses include those who survived the fire, Glodok Plaza management, Tiyara Discotheque management, those who saw the fire, and security staff.

The police have permitted the 1st and 2nd floors of Glodok Plaza to resume operations. However, the 3rd through 9th floors remain under police control.

"The 1st and 2nd floors are now open for business, but the 3rd to 9th floors are still marked off with police tape," Arfan confirmed.

The Glodok Plaza building was engulfed in flames on Wednesday night, January 15, 2025. Tragically, 14 people were reported missing in the fire, which heavily impacted the 7th, 8th, and 9th floors. However, the official search for the missing individuals has now concluded.
