TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto mentioned the failures of the military and police in fulfilling their duties despite being entrusted by the people. He emphasized the importance of dedicated service to the nation and country.

The Chair of the Gerindra Party said that high rank is meaningless without a willingness to sacrifice for the country's sovereignty and security.

"The characteristic of a failed country is its failed military and police. When you accept to wear the rank of general, it means that you must be the first to put your life on the line for the nation and the state," said Prabowo in his speech during the TNI-Polri Leadership Meeting 2025 at the Tribrata Hotel, Dharmawangsa, South Jakarta, Thursday, January 30, 2025.

According to him, the military and police represent the state's presence in protecting its citizens. The state grants significant authority to these forces, including access to weapons and the legal monopoly on the use of force.

"This authority is very significant; it is the people who trust you and give you the power to serve. They are the ones who pay you and provide the means for you, from head to toe, to hold a monopoly over weapons," said Prabowo.

Prabowo's statement serves as a reminder to the police and military regarding their responsibilities. Recently, public scrutiny of their performance has increased, particularly due to instances of personnel involvement in criminal activities.

One recent example is the extortion of concert-goers at the Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) 2024.  Thirty-five police personnel were found guilty and sanctioned for extorting attendees under the guise of a drug raid.

Another incident involved the shooting of a rental car owner at the KM 45 Rest Area of the Tangerang-Merak Toll Road in early January, involving members of the Indonesian Navy. While the suspected perpetrator has been apprehended and is facing prosecution, the incident has negatively impacted the reputation of the TNI-Polri.
