TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has called for a thorough investigation into the shooting of Indonesian nationals in Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, Malaysia, on January 24. He also urged Indonesians to avoid involvement in illegal activities.

“I remind you not to engage in illegal activities. If you are being smuggled or smuggling into another country, the risk is that foreign authorities will take action,” Prabowo said at The Tribrata, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on January 30.

He cautioned Indonesian workers against falling victim to smuggling syndicates promising to send them to other countries. However, Prabowo expressed confidence that Malaysia would carry out a proper investigation. He also mentioned that the issue had already been discussed with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

"We have discussed this in broad terms with Anwar Ibrahim," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that three of the five Indonesian migrant workers shot by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) had been identified. The victims, Muhammad Hanafiah, HA, and B, are from Riau province.

“Two other victims remain in critical condition after surgery and are unable to provide statements,” he said on Wednesday, January 29.

B was pronounced dead and will be repatriated to Indonesia today. The other four migrant workers are still receiving treatment at Serdang Hospital and Klang Hospital in Malaysia.

The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur visited the victims on Tuesday. During the meeting, HA and Muhammad Hanafiah stated that they did not resist when captured by APMM officers in the waters off Tanjung Rhu, Carey Island, Selangor, Malaysia.

However, Malaysian authorities maintain that shots were fired due to resistance from the Indonesian migrant workers, who were attempting to leave Malaysia illegally. Four were injured, and one was killed.

“Both of them said there was no resistance with sharp weapons from the Indonesian nationals against the APMM officers,” Judha added.

Judha assured that the four migrant workers would receive legal assistance to ensure their rights are protected, including covering their hospital bills.
