TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto claimed that Indonesia has had good economic and fiscal policies in recent years. The government maintained a 5 percent growth rate post-COVID-19 pandemic and an inflation rate of 2 percent.
Indonesia, however, still faces challenges that the former Defense Minister intends to address.
"I would say we still have poverty at a large scale which I’m determined to bring down. And we do have a significant percentage of our children malnourished,” said Prabowo in his keynote speech at the APEC CEO Summit in Lima, Peru, on Thursday, November 14, 2024, as quoted from a video by the Presidential Secretariat.
In his speech, Prabowo stressed the importance of collaboration among Pacific countries to achieve economic growth, despite possible geopolitical tensions. Prabowo expressed his belief in the role of the private sector.
"Without growth, we cannot alleviate poverty, we cannot create relevant employment. Therefore, I am very happy and honored to address you," Prabowo said.
The APEC CEO Summit is part of the APEC 2024 Summit in Lima, Peru. The high-level leaders' forum will be held on November 15, 2024, local time. The event is attended by prominent business leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean, senior officials and delegations from APEC countries, as well as participants from the ASEAN Business Advisory Council.
Alleviating poverty
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that the poverty rate in Indonesia dropped slightly to 9.03 percent in March 2024, while the extreme poverty rate was 0.83 percent.
The Prabowo administration believes its flagship program, the free nutritious meal, can help alleviate poverty by creating new job opportunities. Dadan Hindayana, the National Nutrition Agency head conveyed the statement during a meeting with Commission IX of DPR on October 31, 2024.
Not only will the government deploy three agency staff at each service unit for the program, but it will also employ 30 to 47 local residents as cooks and laundry workers.
The program that will commence in January 2025 will target 15 to 20 million children at 82 locations in Indonesia.
However, he stated that the number of residents employed at each service unit would vary depending on the technology, for example dishwashers, available.
Prabowo also established the the National Team for Accelerating Poverty Reduction (BP Taskin), led by former politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, Budiman Sudjatmiko.
