TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto made a phone call to the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump. The moment was shared on the official Instagram account @Prabowo on Monday, November 11, 2024.
During the conversation, Prabowo congratulated Trump on his victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election over Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris.
"If possible, I would like to call on you personally. Wherever you are, I am willing to fly to congratulate you personally, sir,” said Prabowo in English, translated by Tempo.
During the interaction, Trump appreciated the congratulations from Prabowo. The Republican Party elite also expressed willingness to meet in person, although no detailed meeting arrangements were provided. He claimed that the United States had gone through an extraordinary election.
The 45th President of the U.S. occasionally praised Prabowo's recent presidency. The Indonesian President also expressed sympathy for the shooting incident involving Trump during the Pennsylvania campaign last July.
"I got very lucky," Trump said. "I happened to be in the right place and the right direction. Otherwise, I would not be talking to you right now."
Closing the conversation, Prabowo stated that his team would continue to maintain contact with Jared Kushner, the former senior advisor to the U.S. President and Trump’s son-in-law.
Prabowo arrived at Andrews Air Force Base, Washington DC, United States, on Sunday, November 10, 2024, around 4:00 p.m. local time. He flew to America immediately after concluding his Beijing visit.
The former Defense Minister is scheduled to have several meetings in Washington, DC, including with the President of the United States, Joe Biden. The meeting is planned to take place at the White House on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
So far, there has been no official statement from the Presidential Palace to confirm the meeting between Prabowo and Trump. However, earlier, the Head of the Presidential Communications Office, Hasan Nasbi, said the possibility was open for Prabowo to meet Trump.
