TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto resumed his overseas tour to the United Kingdom after attending the G20 Summit in Brazil on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
Thus far, Prabowo has met Xi Jinping in Beijing, U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House, headed to Peru for the APEC Summit, and most recently, the G20 Summit in Brazil.
During his visit to the UK starting today, Monday, November 18, Prabowo will meet with Prime Minister Keir Stamer and King Charles at Buckingham Palace.
Prabowo expressed optimism in attracting investments in his meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “After this, I will head to the UK to discuss economic issues, and the possibilities of attracting investments,” Prabowo said during his participation in the G20 Summit in Brazil on Sunday, as aired on the President's Secretariat YouTube on Monday.
Prabowo’s overseas visits make use of the many invitations received for Indonesia to attend high-level conferences abroad. Prabowo said the trip is intended to garner more cooperation with foreign partners that can boost Indonesia’s economy.
Previously, Prabowo stated on November 13 that Indonesia is interested in joining several economic groups to seek opportunities for the welfare of its people, including OECD and BRICS.
“I don't think there's a problem. We also participate in IPEF and CPTPP,” Prabowo said during a state visit to the United States last Wednesday.
BRICS is a cooperation group initiated by Brazil, India, China, and South Africa. IPEF, or the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, initiated by President Joe Biden in 2022, includes 14 member countries, including the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and ASEAN countries.
Meanwhile, the CPTPP, or Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, is a free trade agreement between Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam.
Meetings with Xi and Biden
During his visit to China, Prabowo and Xi Jinping agreed on several collaborations in fresh coconut export, sustainable capture fisheries, blue economy, mineral resources, green minerals, water resources, and maritime security.
China also expressed support for Prabowo’s free nutritious meal program through funding.
During the meeting at the White House on November 12, 2024, Prabowo and U.S. President Joe Biden successfully agreed on several collaborations.
“To continue expanding this cooperation, President Biden and President Subianto announced new initiatives to deliver a better future for our citizens and a free, open, prosperous, secure, and resilient Indo-Pacific,” the White House statement said.
The White House assured that the U.S. will continue to partner with Indonesia on activities to promote sustainable urban development, including the deployment of innovative smart city solutions, quality infrastructure, and international best practices to improve the quality of life for city residents in Indonesia.
