TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto summons several cabinet members and heads of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) this afternoon for a limited meeting on special economic zones (SEZ) construction. The officials began arriving at the Jakarta Presidential Palace at 02:00 p.m. local time on July 22, 2025.
Among the attending ministers and officials are Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Trade Minister Budi Santoso, Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani, BPS Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Head of Bappenas Rachmat Pambudy, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, and President Director of PLN Darmawan Prasodjo.
Coordinating Minister Airlangga said upon his arrival that the meeting agenda includes the "overall development of SEZs." But Airlangga dismissed that the meeting would concern Trump's tariffs.
Recently, the government planned the development of the Toba Special Economic Zone. The National Economic Council Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that the Lake Toba SEZ aims to boost investment, optimize import-export, accelerate regional development, and make breakthroughs in industrial area development, tourism and trade.
According to Luhut, each area in the Lake Toba region has different characteristics and potentials. Therefore, the Lake Toba SEZ must also consider these two aspects before the local government proposes the business plans.
Some business activities in the SEZ include tourism, sports, agriculture, energy, education, and health. "The regional government sees which business plans are suitable for their region. The central government provides infrastructure support, institutions, business entities, and evaluation," said Luhut in a written statement on Monday, July 14, 2025.
