TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House on Tuesday, November 12. Biden warmly welcomed Prabowo's visit.
During the meeting, Biden told Prabowo that the occasion also celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the U.S. Biden expressed his pride in the strong partnership between the two nations.
“And today, we’re going to discuss how we continue to strengthen that partnership,” Biden said on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, as quoted from the official White House page.
Biden outlined at least four areas of cooperation that can be enhanced to strengthen U.S.-Indonesia cooperation. First, Biden aims to advance a free and open Indo-Pacific with ASEAN at its core.
“As two of the largest democracies in the world, it seems to me that our nations have a special responsibility in this vision,” he added.
Another key area of cooperation highlighted by Biden is combating the climate crisis, recognizing Indonesia's crucial role in the transition to clean energy. Biden also supports the development of secure and resilient supply chains and aims to deepen a comprehensive strategic partnership, including enhanced security cooperation.
“We’ll discuss, also, global challenges, including in Gaza and the South China Sea,” he added.
Prabowo welcomed Biden's proposals. “I will work very hard to strengthen Indonesia and the United States’ relationship. And I would like to work towards this end, that we have a strong cooperation,” he said.
As reported by Reuters, Prabowo reiterated Indonesia's commitment to a non-aligned foreign policy.
Prabowo met with Biden in the Oval Room, shortly after posting a video of his phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. He arrived in Washington directly from China, where he met with President Xi Jinping on his first foreign trip since assuming office last month.
Washington views Indonesia, Southeast Asia's most populous country, as a key partner in a region where its rival, Beijing, has extensive trade and investment ties. Indonesia is also the world's most populous Muslim-majority country.
Although China remains Indonesia's top economic partner, Jakarta is also a major buyer of U.S. weapons. Indonesia is seen as a country willing to increase its metal exports to Western markets.
On Monday, Indonesia clarified that it does not recognize China's claims in most of the South China Sea, despite signing a maritime development agreement with Beijing.
“We continue to encourage Indonesia to work with their legal experts to make sure any agreement they make with (the People's Republic of China) is in accordance with international law, especially the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at a press conference.
