TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met with President of the United States (U.S.) Joe Biden, at the White House, Washington DC, on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. The meeting is part of Prabowo's official working visit to the United States to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
Prabowo arrived at the White House through the North West gate with a presidential motorcade procession. As the car entered the White House area, a line of soldiers carrying flags from the 50 states of the United States paid tribute. After that, the car stopped in front of the West Wing Portico, where President Prabowo got off and was welcomed by the Acting Chief of Protocol of the United States, Ethan Rosenzweig.
The meeting took place in the Oval Office. Prabowo was welcomed directly by Joe Biden. They warmly shook hands before starting discussions.
When meeting Joe Biden, Prabowo expressed his gratitude for the invitation to visit and hold meetings in the United States. "Thank you, President Biden. Thank you for accepting me. I also want to thank you, you personally called me to congratulate me on my election," said Prabowo as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat Office on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
Prabowo also expressed his appreciation for the strong friendship between Indonesia and the United States, which has been ongoing since Indonesia's struggle for independence. He emphasized his government's commitment to continue improving Indonesia-United States relations.
"The United States is a very good friend to us. The United States supported us in the struggle for independence and helped us several times when we needed it. Therefore, I will work hard to strengthen Indonesia-United States relations," said Prabowo.
Biden also emphasized the importance of commemorating the 75 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Indonesia. He affirmed that the partnership between the two countries is currently stronger than ever. "I am proud that the partnership between our countries is the strongest ever, and today we will discuss how to continue this partnership," said Biden.
Biden identified several areas of cooperation, including strengthening a free and open Indo-Pacific region, supporting clean energy transitions in which Indonesia plays a key role, and building secure and resilient supply chains. Biden stressed the importance of a comprehensive strategic partnership that includes deepening security cooperation between the two countries. "We also discussed global challenges including the situation in Gaza and the South China Sea," he said.
