TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has reprimanded Miftah Maulana alias Gus Miftah, the special presidential envoy for religious harmony, for making derogatory remarks towards a tea seller. The incident occurred during a religious gathering in Magelang, Central Java, where Miftah mocked the vendor.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya conveyed the presidential reprimand to Gus Miftah, who has since apologized to the affected individual, Sunhaji, at the latter’s residence.
“The President has given a warning to the person (Miftah) through the Cabinet Secretary,” said Hasan Nasbi, Head of the Presidential Communication Office in a video statement on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
“We hope that good relations can be established and a sense of kinship can grow between the two of them,” he added.
Social media platforms have recently been abuzz with video footage showing Miftah mocking a tea seller, sparking widespread criticism. Many netizens condemned Miftah's behavior, deeming it as arrogant and insensitive.
Hasan Nasbi stressed that the incident has served as a reminder for government officials to be mindful of their words and actions, especially when interacting with the public. He also said that President Prabowo's administration is committed to exercising respectful behavior, particularly towards those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
