TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto gathered several ministers and military chief of staff in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. The head of state discussed disaster handling and defense issues during the meeting, according to the State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi.
"They discussed various things, beyond the matters of disaster, Prabowo spoke about the issue of defense as well, among others," said Prasetyo in West Sumatra, quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Thursday, December 18, 2025.
Prasetyo said the meeting was held before Prabowo's visit to several areas in South Sumatra today, without detailing who was present. But one of those in attendance was Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
Prasetyo did not elaborate what defense-related matters were discussed.
"[Discussing] issues related to the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the progress report of the Police Reform Commission since the Police Chief was present last night," he said, without providing further detail.
President Prabowo Subianto arrived at Minangkabau International Airport, Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. local time. During the visit, the head of state was scheduled to inspect several disaster-affected areas and ensure the acceleration of infrastructure recovery.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted a rising death toll from Sumatra disasters on Thursday, December 18, 2025. Flash floods and landslides hit the northern parts of Sumatra island: Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
Based on data as of December 18 at 06:20 a.m., about 1,059 people were killed in the disaster, an increase of nine from the previous day's data.
