TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has expressed concern over the recent declaration of martial law in South Korea. He appealed to all parties to practice caution and vigilance in the face of rising global tensions.
“If I'm not mistaken, last night the South Korean government declared a state of emergency. So let's not be too careless,” he warned in a speech delivered at the Ta'wid and Anniversary Reception of the 112th Muhammadiyah in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, on Wednesday, December 3, 2024
Prabowo mentioned Indonesia's commitment to non-alignment and emphasized the importance of respecting all nations. He highlighted the destructive nature of war, citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as an example. “A tree needs 20 years to grow, but only takes 15 minutes to fall.”
The war in Ukraine, he noted, has led to a surge in global food prices, affecting people worldwide.
The President also expressed solidarity with the people in Gaza and Lebanon, acknowledging the common humanity of all people.
Prabowo emphasized the need for strong and reliable leadership to maintain peace and stability. He warned against the dangers of religious, ethnic, and cultural extremism, which can fuel conflict and division.
As widely reported, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared a state of martial law in a televised address on Tuesday night, December 3, 2024, only to reverse course six hours later after parliament defied police and special forces cordons to vote to block the move.
