TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The social media app RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu, has climbed to the top of the U.S. App Store as the potential ban of TikTok looms. With the threat of losing access to TikTok, many users are seeking alternative platforms, and RedNote appears to be a popular choice.
Many American users call themselves 'TikTok refugees'. “TikTok users may be flocking to RedNote now, but the ban also implicates other Chinese-owned apps, including RedNote, WeChat, and the other apps run by ByteDance like Lemon8 and CapCut,” as cited by The Verge on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
Originally launched in 2013 as a shopping platform, RedNote has turned into a social media platform with features similar to TikTok. With over 300 million monthly active users globally, RedNote has seen an increase in user growth in recent days, adding more than 700,000 new users in just two days.
The U.S. government has proposed a ban on TikTok due to concerns about data security and national security. The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to rule on the ban on January 19, 2025.
TikTok has actively opposed the ban, filing a petition with the Supreme Court to allow the app to continue operating. In a written statement on December 19, 2024, the company stated, “We believe the court will find the TikTok ban unconstitutional so the over 170 million Americans on our platform can continue to exercise their free speech rights."
TikTok has also warned of the potential economic consequences of a ban, stating that it could result in a loss of over US$1 billion in revenue for small businesses and an estimated US$300 million in revenue for content creators within just one month.
