TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, said to achieve food self-sufficiency, he would focus on other commodities aside from rice, including corn, sugarcane, and others.
Zulhas—the minister’s nickname—said achieving food self-sufficiency by 2028 is unnegotiable. "Food self-sufficiency isn’t about rice, it’s about food. Food encompasses rice, corn, sugarcane, and other commodities. This is a highly strategic program,” he said Monday, November 11, 2024.
The minister said he has held coordination meetings with several ministries for the program, including with the Minister of Forestry and the Minister of Agriculture to discuss plans for rice field printing.
The PAN Party leader also revealed that he will soon depart for Merauke to inspect the opening of new paddies and the optimization of existing fields in that area. He also hopes for the timely distribution of fertilizers to support rice production.
Previously, Zulhas claimed that the government had already drafted a broad strategy outline to achieve food self-sufficiency, including by developing food crops outside of Java Island, such as Papua. He said relying on Java Island for food security is no longer feasible due to land limitations.
"Therefore, the future of rice, sugarcane, and corn cultivation lies in Papua," said Zulhas. "Now we are trying to develop the outline in Merauke."
However, in the future, Zulhas added, the government will establish clusters to grow food commodities, divided based on the suitability of the regions with the designated crops.
"What is suitable for Sulawesi, for example, cloves and chocolate, will become specialties there," said Zulhas, adding that food self-sufficiency will no longer depend on rice with this strategy.
