TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ryan Coogler’s latest film, Sinners, made history at the Academy Awards on Thursday, January 22, 2026, earning a record-breaking 16 nominations—the most ever for a single film.

According to Variety, Sinners scored nominations across major categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku, Best Supporting Actor for Delroy Lindo, Best Screenplay, Best Casting, Production Design, Cinematography, Costume Design, Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, Visual Effects, Original Score, and Original Song for “I Lied to You.”

The film surpasses the previous record of 14 nominations held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016). With 16 nominations, Sinners now has the potential to challenge the record for most Oscar wins, previously held by Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997), and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2013), each with 11 victories.

Other highly nominated films this year come from diverse cinematic genres and budgets. Hamnet, a heart-wrenching drama, received eight nominations, while the Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value earned nine. Both will compete alongside Sinners and One Battle After Another for the top awards.

Additional contenders include the Brazilian crime drama The Secret Agent, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, F1: The Movie, the sports drama Marty Supreme, and the reflective drama Train Dreams.

A Political Statement from Hollywood

Despite Hollywood’s caution over politics amid fears of backlash from President Donald Trump and his supporters, this year’s nominations send a clear message. Sinners and One Battle After Another dominate many major categories, reflecting a cultural and political stance from the film industry.

Sinners, a 1930s-set fantasy horror deeply rooted in Black culture, serves as an allegory for racism and cultural appropriation. Meanwhile, One Battle After Another presents a primal exploration of authoritarianism and civic resistance, highlighting rising fascism and social division.
