TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Southeast Asian Games, SEA Games 2025, has come to a close. Indonesia finished in second place in the standings and successfully exceeded the set target of medals.
The SEA Games in Thailand concluded on Saturday, December 20, 2025. In total, the Indonesian contingent collected 91 gold medals, 111 silver medals, and 131 bronze medals.
Thailand emerged as the champion with nearly three times the number of gold medals compared to Indonesia. They secured 233 gold medals, 154 silver, and 108 bronze. Vietnam took the third position with 87 gold, 81 silver, and 110 bronze medals.
Indonesia exceeded the set targets, surpassing the initial burden of 80 gold medals by 11 gold medals.
In terms of the number of gold medals, the 2025 edition also exceeded Indonesia's previous best performance in an overseas SEA Games event. The highest achievement of gold medals for Indonesia was in the 1993 SEA Games in Singapore, where the Indonesian team collected 88 gold, 81 silver, and 84 bronze medals, securing the overall championship.
In terms of position, the target was also surpassed. For the first time in the last 30 years, Indonesia once again became the runner-up in the SEA Games when not hosting the event. This matches the achievement in the 1995 SEA Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, praised the historic achievement of the Indonesian contingent at SEA Games 2025. "The runner-up position represents a new history, considering the last time Indonesia held that position (when not hosting) was in the 1995 SEA Games," Erick said as quoted by Antara.
Erick Thohir continued, "In previous SEA Games when not hosting, Indonesia's position averaged at third or fourth place."
According to the Minister of Sports, the achievement of Indonesian sports warriors in Thailand is also attributed to the support of the Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto, including an additional incentive of Rp1 billion promised to the gold medalist athletes of SEA Games 2025.
Erick believes that this serves as an additional motivation for the athletes who competed in SEA Games 2025, as well as a breath of fresh air for the parents of future athletes. "It also provides motivation for the athletes to secure their future, because many parents see athletes as having an uncertain future," he said.
President Prabowo Subianto expressed his appreciation for the success of the Indonesian team at SEA Games 2025 in Thailand. "Congratulations on the 91 gold medals. Thank you. On the one hand, I am smiling at the achievement of 91 gold medals. On the other hand, the bonuses are also substantial now," Prabowo said in a video shared by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, on Saturday.
He promised to uphold the commitment to provide the bonuses. "But that is sabdo pandito ratu, the words of a leader must be upheld," Prabowo added.
