TEMPO.CO, Semarang - Flooding hit the city of Semarang after high-intensity rain pelted the Central Java capital on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. The rain lasted from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time.
The flood inundated areas such as Jalan Agus Salim, Patimura, Citarum, Pengapon, Gajah, Medoho, MH Tamrin, and Muktiharjo Lor. The flood reached a height of 50 centimeters, making it impossible for many vehicles to pass, as seen on Jalan Agus Salim near Johar Market.
The rain also caused water currents in the streets of the highland areas of Semarang. Rainwater that was not contained in the drainage channel flowed and carried some materials on Jalan Prof Hamka. "Avoid the Jerakah route, the water flow is mixed with gravel, stones, and sand," said the head of the Semarang City Disaster Management Agency, Endro P. Martanto.
In addition to the roads, the flood also inundated nearby buildings. For example, on Jalan Gajah Raya, the water rose even higher when four-wheeled vehicles drove by.
Several residential areas in Semarang were also affected by floods. In the village of Tlogosari Kulon, floodwaters inundated the streets in the residential area.
Through her social media account, Erma Yulihastin, a researcher at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center BRIN, showed how the rain spread across Central Java since noon. At that time, heavy rains were already observed in Jepara, Batang, Wonosobo, Kendal and Magelang.
"There is potential for further expansion due to strong convection from the Java Sea and Kalimantan," Erma said.
In the afternoon, the rain spread to Semarang, Salatiga, Boyolali, and Sragen, according to the weather radar. Erma updated the weather information while also sharing the rain developments in Jabodetabek, which also expanded.
