TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, has imposed a temporary three-month suspension on South Aceh Regent, Mirwan MS, for traveling abroad without permission while his area was hit by floods and landslides. The decision took effect on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
"The individual is subject to administrative sanctions in the form of a temporary suspension of three months for violating Article 76 paragraph 1 letter i, by traveling abroad without the Minister's permission," said Tito at a press conference at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
During the suspension, Deputy Regent Baital Mukaddis was appointed as the acting Regent of South Aceh. Tito stated that Mirwan was required to undergo an internship at the Ministry of Home Affairs as part of his development. "In three months, he will go back and forth to the Ministry of Home Affairs for the internship. We will guide him again," he said.
The departure of the South Aceh Regent for umrah trip became controversial when his region was hit by a disaster. Mirwan had applied for permission to travel abroad for important reasons through a letter numbered 093/1334/2025 dated November 24, 2025, which was sent to the Governor of Aceh, Muzakir Manaf.
However, the Aceh Government refused to process the permit because the disaster emergency status still applied at the provincial and district levels, as stated in the response letter numbered 100.1.4.2/18413 on November 28, 2025. Despite the permit not being issued, Mirwan still departed for the Holy Land. Meanwhile, the handling of floods and landslides in South Aceh was still ongoing.
Mirwan M.S apologized for his actions of traveling abroad without permission while his region was being hit by floods and landslides. He acknowledged that his actions had caused distress and disappointment to the public.
He posted his statement on his official Instagram account @h.mirwan_ms_official. "I apologize, especially to President Prabowo Subianto, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Governor of Aceh Muzakir Manaf, and the entire community, especially in South Aceh," he said in a video statement on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
