TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - World leaders from major economies including the United States, the European Union, and Brazil plan to skip the United Nations climate change summit this year, known as COP29, in Baku, Azerbaijan.
As quoted from Reuters, a spokesperson for the European Commission said Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, will not attend the COP29 Climate Summit due to political developments in Brussels.
"The Commission is in a transition phase, and the president will therefore focus on her institutional duties," the spokesperson said, as quoted by Tempo on Monday, November 11, 2024.
President of the United States Joe Biden will also not be attending the event, according to a Biden administration source speaking to Reuters. COP29 will take place from November 11 to 24.
President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has canceled his trip to COP29 after suffering a head injury last month.
Some world leaders are still attending the United Nations climate summit. In the previous COP meeting, country leaders used their speeches to announce new policies and funding to reduce CO2 emissions or double down on their commitment to global efforts to curb climate change.
The U.S. presidential election is looming over the climate summit, as several climate diplomats say President-elect Donald Trump will make it harder for COP29 to reach a large-scale deal in climate funding. During his first term, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement.
Li Shuo, a climate diplomacy expert at the Asia Society Policy Institute, said what countries bring to COP29 in terms of their actions to mobilize more finances will ultimately be more important than which leaders attend the summit.
"What matters most is leadership. Leaders should always be at the COP. But more important than their presence is the real commitments countries bring to the table," said Li Shuo, as quoted from Reuters.
Leaders of China, Japan, Australia, and Mexico are also absent from this summit in Baku. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto won’t be attending, and the Indonesian delegation will be led by his brother, Hashim Djojohadikusumo.
Hashim serves as the president's special envoy for climate change. In COP29, Hashim will be accompanied by Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol, Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni, and Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Djiwandono.
COP29 coincides with the G-20 Summit in Brazil on November 18-19, where leaders of advanced economies will also discuss climate transition funding efforts.
