TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several areas across Jakarta were hit by a sudden power outage on Thursday night, April 9, 2026. The disruption affected various regions, including Central, North, and West Jakarta, sparking widespread complaints from residents across social media platforms.
State-owned electricity firm PLN's main distribution unit (UID) in Jakarta confirmed the disruption. Haris Andika, the company's Senior Manager of Communication and Public Relations, noted that the blackout was triggered by electrical supply issues originating from several substations.
"There was a disruption in the electrical supply in several areas of Jakarta sourced from several substations tonight," Haris stated in a written release on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
As of 8:00 p.m., the outage persisted in the Angke sub-district of North Jakarta and its surrounding neighborhoods. According to Haris, PLN is gradually normalizing the grid and will continue to provide updates to the public.
MRT Jakarta Services Disrupted
The power failure also took a toll on transportation services. City-owned mass transit operator PT MRT Jakarta reported operational disruptions at several stations starting from 5:57 p.m. due to power supply constraints on PLN's side.
Key facilities, including lighting, lifts, and escalators, were temporarily non-functional, and all elevated stations were plunged into a total blackout. However, MRT officials ensured that the situation had gradually returned to normal following swift intervention.
Technical teams are continuously monitoring field conditions to ensure services remain stable. MRT Jakarta also issued an apology to commuters for the inconvenience, emphasizing that passenger safety remains their absolute priority.
