TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono attended the meeting of foreign ministers from G7 member countries and Indo-Pacific partners in Fiuggi, Italy, on November 25-26, 2024. Indonesia's participation in the G7 forum was at the invitation of the Italian Foreign Minister, who also extended invitations to the Philippines, India, and South Korea.
In his statement, Sugiono conveyed Indonesia's commitment, under the leadership of President Prabowo, to improving the welfare of its people and contributing positively to the Indo-Pacific region through sustainable and inclusive development.
He highlighted Indonesia's dedication to strengthening ASEAN as a driving force for regional collaboration, as reflected in the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP). In the face of global challenges, AOIP aims to foster a conducive environment for peace, stability, and prosperity through mutually beneficial cooperation.
“Indonesia hopes that all countries will respect and support ASEAN's vision to ensure and promote transparent and inclusive cooperation in the region,” he stated.
During the meeting, Sugiono expressed appreciation for the G7's support and collaboration with ASEAN through various mechanisms. In line with its constitutional mandate, Indonesia will continue to bridge the gap between developed and developing countries. Therefore, Indonesia advocates for inclusive multilateralism and strengthens coordination between regional and international organizations.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Sugiono held bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and South Korea. With the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, he discussed the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. With the South Korean Foreign Minister, Marsudi explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various areas, including defense, shipbuilding, fisheries, and workforce training.
The Group of Seven (G7) comprises Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These countries collectively represent over 64% of global net wealth. Initially formed to address economic crises triggered by the 1970s oil shocks, the G7's agenda has expanded to encompass a wide range of issues, including security, peace, climate change, and health.
