TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thailand has called on Cambodia to be the first to declare a ceasefire to end the ongoing fighting between the two nations, which has persisted for over a week and resulted in numerous casualties.

As the aggressor onto Thai territory, Cambodia must announce the ceasefire first,” said Maratee Nalita Andamo, spokesperson for the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as quoted by CNA. She added that Cambodia should also cooperate in efforts to clear landmines along the border.

The conflict between the neighboring Southeast Asian countries reignited in December 2025. At least 32 people, including both soldiers and civilians, have been killed, while some 800,000 have been displaced.

Both sides blame each other for triggering the clashes, with Thailand and Cambodia accusing one another of attacking civilians. Cambodia has yet to issue an official statement on the ceasefire demands.

Last week, US President Donald Trump stated that both countries had agreed to a ceasefire starting Saturday night. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed support for a ceasefire initiative led by Malaysia, the chair of the ASEAN bloc, with US involvement.

Despite this, clashes have continued daily since December 7, 2025, with Bangkok denying Trump’s ceasefire claim.

The two countries clashed again on Monday, December 15, 2025. Cambodia accused Thailand of launching attacks deep into its territory, including bombings in a province that houses the centuries-old Angkor Wat temple, a major tourist destination.

The Cambodian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that a Thai fighter jet carried out an airstrike near a civilian refugee camp in the Srei Snam district of Siem Reap province.

Cambodian Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra described the strike as the farthest military penetration by Thailand during the renewed clashes, noting that Thai forces entered more than 70 km into Cambodian territory—well beyond the disputed border area.
