TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Security Council of Philippines will verify the alleged assassination threat by Vice President Sara Duterte against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. According to a high-ranking official as cited by Reuters, Sunday, November 24, 2024, the threat is a national security issue.

Sara Duterte, on Saturday, stated that she had spoken with an assassin. Duterte ordered them to kill Marcos Jr., his wife, and the spokesperson of the Philippine House of Representatives if he were to be assassinated.

National Security Adviser Eduardo Ano stated that the government considers all threats against the president as a serious matter. The government will closely cooperate with law enforcement and intelligence communities to investigate the threats and their potential perpetrators.

"Every threat to the president's life must be validated and deemed a national security issue," Ano said in a statement.

In response to Duterte's threat, President Marcos' security command stated that they have tightened protocols in safeguarding the Philippine leader. The national police chief has ordered an investigation.

Duterte and Marcos were once political allies who won a remarkable mandate to lead the country's two highest positions in 2022. The alliance fell apart this year due to policy differences, including foreign policy and the deadly war on drugs of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Marcos' congressional allies separately investigate the war on drugs conducted by Sara's father, Rodrigo Duterte, which resulted in more than 6,000 fatalities in anti-drug operations. Sara Duterte is also embroiled in corruption allegations regarding the use of public funds during her tenure as Education Minister. Both deny any wrongdoing. Duterte resigned from her Cabinet position in June.
