A MASSIVE crowd of protesters gathered in Pati's town square on Wednesday morning, August 13, 2025. They demanded that Regent Sudewo resign due to a number of his decisions that have been publicly opposed.
The protesters, estimated to number in the thousands, came from various areas of Pati Regency, Indonesia. They arrived by motorcycle and pickup truck. Along the way to the rally site, they waved flags and banners bearing their demands.
The protesters then walked to Pati's town square. Access to the center of Pati City was closed to motorized vehicles. Security personnel were deployed. There were layers of them.
A pickup truck was parked in front of the gate of the Pati Regent's Office. Representatives of the crowd took turns giving speeches atop the truck. They sang songs and chanted slogans demanding Sudewo's resignation.
Today's protest marked the culmination of public protests against several of Sudewo's policies. Previously, the Gerindra Party politician had raised the Land and Building Tax (PBB) by 250 percent.
Sudewo's decision sparked public opposition, prompting plans to hold a rally. Sudewo responded to the planned protest with a statement that he would not change his mind, even challenging the public to attend in large numbers.
The protests escalated. Residents then raised funds for rally logistics. The Pati Civil Service Police Unit confiscated the donated logistics, sparking public anger and escalating the protests. The donations became unstoppable.
After receiving widespread protests, Sudewo reversed his decision to raise the property tax (PBB) by 250 percent. However, people continued to protest. "We'll keep demonstrating," said the donation coordinator, Teguh Istuyanto. "Bring Sudewo down."
Currently, the protest is still ongoing, with crowds continuing to arrive. The protest coordinator estimates that around 150,000 people will attend.
