TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Suspect in the case of alleged corruption in sugar imports Thomas Trikasih Lembong, or Tom Lembong, delivered a message on World Anti-Corruption Day (Hakordia) 2024. Through his strokes from behind bars, Tom writes a message about the corruption happening in Indonesia.
"My hard work, belief, and perseverance to participate and continuously contribute to building a corruption-free Indonesia are being tested by the situation I am currently facing in detention," Tom said in a letter he wrote and posted on his personal Instagram account on Monday, December 9, 2024. It is known that Tom Lembong's personal Instagram account is now managed by his legal representative.
Despite being tested by the situation, Tom said he still believes that the aspiration to build a corruption-free Indonesia is not just a dream. "There are many concrete and simple steps that can be taken," he said. To reduce corruption, Tom invites the public to unite their hopes and dreams to move politically.
He also described himself as an innocent and naive person. He also said that he trusted others too much, which led him to be trapped in the Attorney General's detention today. The legal process he is currently undergoing, Tom said, will not make him give up. He even said he still believes in the Indonesian nation.
"Even today, I still believe in the Indonesian nation. I still love Indonesia. Happy World Anti-Corruption Day," Tom said.
It is known that the Attorney General's Office has named Tom Lembong and the Director of Business Development of PT PPI, Charles Sitorus, as suspects in the corruption case of sugar imports. Investigators have detained them on Tuesday night, October 29, 2024. Head of the Legal Information Center (Kapuspenkum) of the Attorney General's Office, Harli Siregar, stated that they have been investigating this case since October 2023.
According to the Attorney General's Office, Tom's issued policy violated the law. Because the sugar import permit policy should have been given to state-owned enterprises. Meanwhile, Tom issued the sugar import permit to eight private companies.
Tom Lembong is also deemed guilty for issuing the sugar import policy at an inappropriate time. The Attorney General's Office mentioned that the former Trade Minister in the Jokowi era issued the sugar import permit while Indonesia was experiencing a sugar surplus.
