TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chongqing, famously dubbed “Cyberpunk City,” is a city and provincial-level municipality in southwest-central China. Home to 32 million, it is the largest city in southwest China, set against the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers.
The massive metropolis of Chongqing is also surrounded by four mountains—Mount Wushan, Daba Mountains, Wuling Mountains, Wulong Mountains, and Dalou Mountains—earning the region its nickname, Mountain City.
The buildings in Chongqing are modern and futuristic, with skyscrapers and ancient monuments perched on steep hills. Some of the internet favorites of Chongqing are the light rail transit (LRT) with a station amid residential buildings and trippy multilevel structures with seemingly endless ground floors.
Citing Travel and Leisure Asia and Britannica, let’s take a glimpse into some of Chongqing’s top destinations below:
1. Liziba Station
Liziba station is a monorail station on Line 2 of the Chongqing Rail Transit. Videos of the LRT often go viral, as it showcases the train passing through a residential building. Contrary to some misreporting, the station is actually part of the building ever since it was established in 2005, and the apartments are reserved for 9–19 floors of the structure.
2. Chongqing Museum
This museum is known as the Three Gorges Museum. As the largest monographic museum in the city, it was built for the preservation, education, and scientific research of Chongqing's culture and natural environment. The Three Gorges Museum opened in 2005 and collects historical artifacts submerged in the artificial lake behind the Three Gorges Dam. True to its name, the museum showcases the culture and natural conditions of Chongqing and the three gorges.
3. Hongyadong
A picturesque landmark, the ancient stilt building rests along the banks of the Yangtze River, depicting Chongqing’s history through its traditional Bayu architecture. The Hongyadong, or Hongya Cave, has become a cultural and tourist center that maintains the traditional exterior of the structure. To enjoy the beauty of the 11-story building, tourists should come at night, as the area lights up with dazzling colors.
4. Kuixing Building
As one of the most well-known attractions in Chongqing, the Kuixing building is dubbed a “Magic Buidling” for its unique layout. The multilevel open plaza will make visitors think they’re on the ground floor, when they, in fact, are standing on the 22nd or even 25th floor of a building.
5. Wulong National Park
Wulong National Park, or the Wulong Karst, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers natural beauty. The park is known for its beautiful karst landscape. Visitors will be shown a view of a high valley surrounded by green cliffs, lakes, and waterfalls.
6. Dazu Rock Carvings
The Dazu Rock carvings is a Chinese cave temple art, dated between the 9th and 13th centuries. The complex has 75 cave temples with over 50,000 statues that are preserved for their artistic and historical value. The place is divided into five rooms, namely Beishan, Baodingshan, Nanshan, Shizhuanshan, and Shimenshan. Dazu Stone Carving is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
