Trump Considers Reclassifying Marijuana as Less Dangerous Drug

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his administration is weighing the possibility of reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous substance. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, August 11, 2025, Trump said a decision on the drug’s legal status would be made in the coming weeks.

"That determination hopefully will be the right one," Trump was quoted as saying by Al Jazeera. "It’s a very complicated subject."

He noted that while he has heard positive accounts of marijuana’s medical benefits, he has also been informed of its potential downsides.

"Some people like it, some people hate it," he said. "Some people hate the whole concept of marijuana because if it does bad for the children, it does bad for people that are older than children."

Trump’s remarks triggered a surge in marijuana-related stocks. Tilray Brands, based in New York, jumped nearly 42 percent, while Canada’s Village Farms International and Canopy Growth Corp gained roughly 34 percent and 26 percent, respectively.

His comments followed a report by The Wall Street Journal last week that he had told attendees at a fundraising dinner he was considering the reclassification.

Marijuana is currently legal for recreational use in 24 U.S. states but remains illegal at the federal level. It is classified as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin, LSD, and ecstasy, under the Drug Enforcement Administration’s system, which designates Schedule I drugs as having a high potential for abuse.

Former President Joe Biden had sought to move marijuana to Schedule III, a category for substances with moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence, but the proposal was not implemented before he left office.
