TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has given Indonesia additional leeway to continue negotiations regarding reciprocal tariffs before the policy is officially implemented on August 1, 2025.
As quoted from Antara, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the Head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), Hasan Nasbi, mentioned that initially, a 32 percent import tariff on Indonesian products was scheduled to take effect from July 9, 2025. However, in a recent notification, President Trump decided to postpone its implementation until early August.
"The negotiation should have ended tomorrow. However, in the latest statement given by President Trump, the tariff will only be enforced starting August 1. That means he is extending the time to provide space for further discussions and negotiations," Hasan said during a press conference at the PCO Office, Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
In an official letter on White House letterhead dated July 7 and addressed to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Trump stated that a 32 percent import tariff will still be imposed on all Indonesian products entering the U.S., outside of other sectoral tariff schemes. This policy refers to the tariff value previously announced in April.
"Starting on August 1, 2025, we will charge Indonesia a tariff of only 32 percent on any and all Indonesian products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs," Trump said in the letter dated July 7 on White House letterhead addressed to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
However, according to Hasan, the letter's tone still leaves room for negotiations, allowing Indonesia to obtain a lower tariff than the preset figure.
In addition to Indonesia, Trump also sent a similar letter to several other heads of state in Southeast Asia. Through his social media, he openly released the decision to impose tariffs. Some countries, such as Thailand and Cambodia, recorded a reduction in import tariffs from previous figures ranging from 36 to 49 percent.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto is reportedly en route to the United States to continue diplomatic discussions, following the Indonesian government's ongoing efforts to adjust to the U.S. reciprocal tariff policy.
Hasan explained that after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto is now heading to Washington, D.C., United States. His trip aims to continue negotiations regarding the 32 percent import tariff imposed on Indonesia.
"Bapak Coordinating Minister for the Economy is currently on a journey from Rio to DC. Earlier, I contacted him and he was on his way from Rio to DC," Hasan said in a press release at PCO Office, Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Hasan explained that the negotiating team from the Ministry of Economic Affairs is already in the U.S. capital. He is optimistic that the long-established bilateral relationship between Indonesia and the United States will be a positive asset in facilitating the negotiation process.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is also opening up negotiations by offering an increase in energy imports from the United States. This step is part of the strategy to respond to the 32 percent reciprocal tariff policy imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Indonesia.
"The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs (Airlangga Hartarto) is still making efforts. We offer a trade balance from the energy side of about 15 billion U.S. dollars," said Deputy Minister of ESDM, Yuliot Tanjung, when met in Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
