TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump threatened on Sunday to block the Straits of Hormuz using the US Navy. He also asserted to intercept any ships in international waters that have paid import duties to Iran.
Trump made the statement in a post on Truth Social, as reported by Bangkok Post a few hours after the US-Iran peace talks ended without an agreement.
Trump said that the meeting "went well, most points were agreed," but added that both parties had not agreed on Iran's nuclear program.
"Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz," said Trump, who strongly opposed Iran's idea of collecting import duties from ships to pass through the straits.
"I have also instructed our Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran. No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas," he said.
An open conflict erupted when the US-backed Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, killing the then Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. In addition to killing Khamenei, the series of attacks also resulted in more than 3,000 casualties until the second week of April.
In response to threats against its sovereignty, Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets. Iran also restricted the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
This situation quickly escalated into a regional crisis. Global energy trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz were threatened, causing oil prices to fluctuate.
