TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The United States (U.S.) Embassy is preparing a cultural preservation grant to further strengthen bilateral relations with Indonesia.

Public Diplomacy Officer at the United States Embassy, Emily Magaziner, mentioned that the United States will continue to provide grant funding as part of the enduring cooperation with Indonesia, a partnership that has flourished for 75 years.

Emily highlighted several key achievements in the cooperation between the two nations, including in the fields of culture, economy, and defense. In the cultural sphere, the United States offers the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, a grant program dedicated to supporting the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

This program provides financial assistance for the conservation of tangible cultural heritage, such as historic buildings, as well as the safeguarding of intangible heritage, including performing arts and traditional music.

The grant allocation amounts to US$275,000, approximately Rp4 billion, every two years. The U.S. Embassy collaborates closely with a foundation to administer the grant, which has been instrumental in funding the preservation efforts of several prominent historical museums in Jakarta, including the Maritime Museum, the History Museum, and the National Museum of Indonesia.

“Preservation through museum collection documentation,” Emily said following a performance by the Empire Wild music group from the United States as part of the 75th-anniversary celebration of bilateral relations between the U.S. and Indonesia at the Yogyakarta Palace on Monday, December 9, 2024.

Moving forward, the U.S. Embassy will actively seek opportunities to expand cultural collaborations with a diverse range of art groups across Indonesia. Emily underscored the importance of these ongoing collaborations in fostering and strengthening the enduring friendship between the two nations.

Aside from culture, Emily mentioned that the U.S. Government will continue to strengthen defense and security cooperation with Indonesia during the administration of President Prabowo Subianto. This ongoing partnership includes annual military training exercises, a tradition established during Prabowo's tenure as Defense Minister in the previous administration under President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
