TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
This was conveyed by the UN Secretary-General's spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, in a statement released Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
"[Secretary-General Guterres] calls on all the parties to the current conflict in the Middle East to comply with their obligations under international law and to abide by the terms of the ceasefire in order to pave the way toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region," Dujarric said in a statement, as quoted from Anadolu.
This came after United States President Donald Trump announced his agreement to suspend bombings and attacks on Iran for two weeks.
Trump earlier threatened that "a whole civilization will die tonight," ahead of the Tuesday night deadline for Iran to reopen Strait of Hormuz.
Guterres also emphasized that an immediate cessation of hostilities is crucial to protect civilian lives and alleviate human suffering amid the crisis.
He also commended the mediation efforts led by Pakistan and other countries, which worked to facilitate the ceasefire agreement.
"The Secretary-General's Personal Envoy Jean Arnault is in the region to support efforts towards lasting peace," Dujarric said.
