TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations (UN) has released preliminary findings into the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), pointing to separate incidents involving Israeli tank fire and a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) or a bomb.
In a statement issued on April 7, 2026, and received by Tempo on April 8, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the findings had been shared with the governments of Indonesia, Israel, and Lebanon.
The peacekeepers—Major Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, First Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ichwan, and Corporal Farizal Rhomadon—were killed in incidents on March 29 and 30.
According to the UN, evidence from the March 29 incident indicates that a 120 mm tank round struck a UN position in southern Lebanon. Analysis of the impact site and recovered fragments suggests the projectile was fired from an Israel Defense Forces Merkava tank from the east, toward Ett Taibe.
Dujarric noted that UNIFIL had previously provided the Israeli military with the coordinates of all its positions and facilities on March 6 and March 22, as part of efforts to reduce risks to UN personnel.
The following day’s incident, on March 30, was linked to an explosion caused by a victim-activated, or tripwire, IED. Based on the location, nature of the blast, and current conditions in the area, the UN assessment indicates the device was most likely planted by Hezbollah.
The findings remain preliminary and are based on initial physical evidence. The UN said full investigations are ongoing, including further engagement with all parties involved. Formal Boards of Inquiry will be convened in accordance with established UN procedures.
The UN also reiterated its condolences to the families of the fallen peacekeepers and the Indonesian government, while wishing a full recovery for those injured.
“These incidents are unacceptable,” Dujarric said, adding that the UN has called on relevant authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible.
He stressed that attacks on UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law and urged all parties to uphold their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel, as well as respect the inviolability of UN installations.
