TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two oil tankers changed course and turned back near the Strait of Hormuz after the United States (US) began imposing a naval blockade. The blockade targets ships entering or leaving Iranian ports in the strategic waterway.

According to real-time ship tracking data from MarineTraffic, as reported by Anadolu Agency, the two vessels changed course shortly after approaching the strait.

The Malawi-flagged oil and chemical tanker Rich Starry, 188 meters long, departed from the Sharjah anchorage in the Persian Gulf in the United Arab Emirates and turned back minutes after approaching the strait.

The ship had left the anchorage on Monday morning and listed China as its destination.

The second tanker, the Botswana-flagged Ostria, 175 meters long, also changed course and began returning after approaching the Strait of Hormuz.

The US blockade on maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports began at 14:00 GMT on Monday.

In a statement, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the naval blockade would be enforced "impartially" against vessels from all countries entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas, including those in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

US President Donald Trump ordered the US Navy on Sunday to block the Strait of Hormuz, angered by Iran's refusal to give up its nuclear ambitions after peace talks in Pakistan collapsed without a deal.
