TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran will begin a two-week negotiation period to end the war with the United States in Islamabad, Pakistan, starting Friday, April 10, 2026. This was announced by the country's Supreme National Security Council in a statement on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, as reported by NBC News.
The Council added that the negotiation period can be extended if both parties agree.
Ending the war will depend on US acceptance to the demands outlined by Iran in a 10-point plan submitted to the US through Pakistan, the statement said.
"It is emphasized that this does not mean the end of the war, and Iran will only accept the end of the war when, in addition to accepting the principles outlined in the 10-point plan, the details are finalized in negotiations," the statement said.
The statement said that the requirements have been agreed upon by the country's highest leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.
The 10-point plan mentioned in the statement covers many issues that could thwart the entire process, such as the withdrawal of all US military forces from the region and the lifting of all sanctions on Iran.
"This plan emphasizes key points such as controlled passage through the Strait of Hormuz coordinated with Iran’s armed forces, granting Iran a unique economic and geopolitical position."
The Council also underscored the need to end the war against all components of the resistance axis, "Meaning a historic defeat of the aggression of the Zionist regime; withdrawal of US combat forces from all bases and positions in the region," the statement said.
Some additional points from the plan include "establishment of a secure transit protocol in the Strait of Hormuz ensuring Iran’s control under the agreed framework."
Tehran also demands full compensation for the damage suffered by Iran; the lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions as well as related resolutions by the Board of Governors and the UN Security Council; the release of all frozen Iranian assets abroad; and finally, the adoption of all these provisions in a binding UN Security Council resolution."
US Prepares Face-to-Face Negotiations
The Trump administration is preparing for potential face-to-face negotiations between US and Iran officials in the coming days. This comes as both parties seek to reach a long-term agreement to end the war between Washington and Tehran, according to US officials speaking to CNN.
"There are discussions about in-person talks, but nothing is final until announced by the President or the White House," said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt to CNN.
The meeting is likely to take place in Islamabad with the presence of Pakistani mediators, the officials said. They added that this is becoming more likely due to the two-week ceasefire announced by the US and Iran last night.
Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Vice President JD Vance are expected to attend, the officials said. Vance is currently visiting Hungary, and sources indicate that the visit could be extended to include this if the timing is right.
