TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka endorses the idea put forward by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education and Abdul Mu'ti to establish a special school for children victims of violence, including sexual violence.
"Children who are victims of sexual violence and others must receive special attention. They must not be expelled from school,” Gibran said during a coordination meeting to evaluate elementary and secondary education in Gandaria, South Jakarta, on Monday, November 11, 2024.
“They require special attention, and, if possible, we need to build special schools for them,” he added.
Gibran welcomes the idea and considers the proposal remarkable. “And I believe President Prabowo will also welcome the proposal,” he said.
On the same occasion, Gibran proposes the enactment of a Teacher Protection Law. He asks not to misuse the Child Protection Law as a tool to criminalize teachers.
The vice president said schools should serve as safe havens for both students and teachers. Former President Jokowi’s son calls for the eradication of violence, bullying, and criminalization of teachers at schools.
Gibran emphasizes that the Child Protection Law should serve its intended purpose, not become a means to prosecute teachers. "Teachers should have the space to educate students with more discipline, but there must be a law and protection for this," said the former Mayor of Solo.
Today's coordination meeting was attended by heads of the Education Offices across Indonesia and several specially invited regional heads. The occasion aimed to improve the performance of policies implemented by the ministry.
Two main issues were discussed at the meeting: the zoning policy and new student admission system (PPDB) and the policy regarding teachers who are contract-based civil servants (PPPK).
"These are two issues that become quite polemic in the community," Mu'ti said.
