NATIONAL INFO - Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (Mendes PDT) Yandri Susanto recently unveiled a bold vision for Indonesia’s villages: achieving food sovereignty by 2030. This vision, known as "Desa Daulat Pangan," seeks to empower each village to establish its own food reserves, ensuring adequate supply to meet the needs of local residents while contributing to national self-sufficiency. “Villages have immense potential to become hubs of food production, energy resilience, and water sufficiency,” Yandri stated during the launch of the Technical Capacity Improvement Provider Training Platform (P2KTD) at the Bengkulu Training Center on November 12, 2024.
According to Yandri, empowering villages to cultivate food sovereignty is not just a local aspiration but a national priority. By building robust, self-sustaining agricultural systems at the village level, Indonesia can lessen its dependence on food imports and strengthen rural economies. As a result, the Ministry of Villages (Kemendes PDT) has taken up a pivotal role in implementing the Village Government Strengthening and Development Program (P3PD) in collaboration with the World Bank. This program aims to empower village administrations and provide them with the tools and resources to support self-sufficient agricultural practices.
“Villages are the backbone of food reserves, energy sustainability, and water management," Yandri said. “They are centers for products that can be processed for downstream industries, adding value to our agricultural output.” Yandri urged villages to tap into their local resources, whether through crop diversification, efficient water use, or the adoption of sustainable farming techniques. He noted that empowering villages to meet their food needs independently would not only enhance food security but also foster greater social and economic resilience at the grassroots level.
One of the key strategies for realizing this vision is to equip village leaders and stakeholders with essential technical skills. Through programs like P2KTD, village facilitators and agricultural extension workers receive training in modern, sustainable farming practices. These capacity-building efforts aim to help villagers manage their agricultural operations efficiently, increase yields, and adopt environmentally friendly techniques, ensuring long-term food security.
Furthermore, Minister Yandri highlighted the importance of community involvement in achieving food sovereignty. He urged local governments, businesses, and civil society organizations to join forces with villages in creating sustainable food systems. (*)
