TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) in Yogyakarta reported that continuous rainfall hit the summit area of Mount Merapi on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
Rain was detected on the peak of Mount Merapi starting at 12:19 pm and continued until the afternoon with a rainfall amount of 39.37 mm, intensity 46.32 mm/hour. "Be aware of the dangers of lava in rivers originating from Mount Merapi as well as pyroclastic flows in potential danger areas," BPPTKG chief Agus Budi Santoso said on Thursday.
Several amateur videos circulating on social media among Yogyakarta residents showed the condition of rivers originating from Mount Merapi, indicating the presence of cold, blackish-gray lava flows due to the intense rainfall, including the Gendol River in Cangkringan District, Sleman Regency.
The head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Yogyakarta, Noviar Rachmad, said that the potential for rain-induced lava disasters was increasing due to high rainfall in early December. "Based on the data we have received, the volume of material (from the eruption) of Mount Merapi has now reached 30 million cubic meters," he said on Thursday.
Noviar explained that the residue of tens of millions of eruptive materials if washed away by heavy rainfall, would trigger cold lava floods or rain lava flows that could reach rivers originating from Merapi. Some of these rivers are connected to rivers that pass through the city of Yogyakarta, such as the Boyong River, which is connected to the Code River.
"The potential danger of rain-induced lava catastrophes is high if the overflow has reached rivers south of Mount Merapi, especially if it is carried downstream by intense rainfall, the rivers it passes through will experience a rapid increase in water discharge and trigger floods," Noviar added.
According to the latest observations, when the peak of Mount Merapi was hit by intense rainfall throughout November, the conditions of the rivers coming down from the mountain were still safe. The same is true for rivers in urban areas. "The water discharge of major rivers is below the threshold, which is still safe because their flows have not reached the south of the mountain," he said.
Although Mount Merapi is still on alert level III, and heavy rains are pouring down on the peak, several tourist destinations in the area still operate normally.
