1. Tsinghua University

The prestigious Tsinghua University takes the top spot as China’s best university, and it’s easy to see why. Not only does it boast a comprehensive learning culture, but the university also values every intersection—whether it’s between Western and Chinese cultures, the sciences and humanities, or the ancient and the modern. 

Tsinghua consistently attracts international students from over 100 countries, with people from Asian countries making up the largest group. Offering over 80 undergraduate degree programs, students are supported by the presence of 300 cutting-edge research labs.

2. Peking University

When it comes to renowned Chinese universities, Peking University remains a top contender. Established as the “Imperial University of Peking,” it has earned a strong reputation, particularly in the basic sciences. 

Today, Peking is home to over 46,000 students and is supported by 34 colleges and 80 research institutes. The university also provides its students with endless knowledge sources, through its five million books collection secured within its library—known as one of China’s largest.

3. Fudan University

Located in Shanghai, Fudan University places a strong emphasis on a comprehensive, research-oriented approach. With over 30,000 students currently enrolled, the university offers up to 450 programs, spanning undergraduate to doctoral levels. 

Fudan’s impact extends beyond academia with 11 affiliated hospitals, a result of the merger in 2000 with Shanghai Medical University. Socially, students benefit from involvement in over 300 university clubs.

4. Zhejiang University

Zhejiang is among the public institutions that made its mark among the best universities in China. Serving more than 47,000 students, the university’s outstanding technological innovation is evident in its School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, as well as its innovation in clean energy and industrial control technology.

To ensure its students receive a solid educational experience, Zhejiang has formed partnerships with more than 140 overseas institutions in over 30 countries. Domestically, it supports more than a dozen research labs, such as the State Key Lab of Clean Energy Utilization and the State Key Lab of Rice Biology.

5. Shanghai Jiao Tong University

With a history dating back to 128 years ago, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has become a major research hub, particularly in mechanical and electrical engineering. SJTU has produced more than 400,000 alumni.

6. University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)

8. Wuhan University

The university boasts partnerships with over 310 universities and research institutes across 53 countries, helping students stay at the forefront of global advancements.

9. Beijing Normal University (BNU)

Known for its excellent research in the field of environmental sciences, Beijing Normal University is highly regarded in China and abroad. Established in 1902, BNU was initially established to facilitate the training of teachers in Chinese higher education. The university keeps the “normal school” title, aimed to mark its role in the sector during the early 20th century. 

Today, more than 23,000 students study at BNU and benefit from the resources of the university’s vast library, which houses over 4.3 million volumes.

10. Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT)

Known as “the cradle of engineers,” HIT has pioneered many significant achievements, including being the first Chinese university to develop and independently launch small satellites into the moon’s orbit.
