11,000 Units of iPhone 16 Enter Indonesia, Ministry Says IMEI Blocked Immediately

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry found that the number of iPhone 16 products that entered Indonesia from abroad in passenger baggage increased by about 2,000 units between October 25 and November 10, 2024. This means that about 11,000 units of iPhone 16 entered Indonesia from August to November 2024.

"This has become the focus of the minister (Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita) to consider deactivating the IMEI that is proven to be traded in Indonesia," said Industry Ministry spokesman, Febri Hendri Antoni Arif, when met at his office on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

Febri said that his side is monitoring the purchase and sale transactions of iPhone 16 products in the country. He claimed that the ministry has a re-screening mechanism to ensure that the iPhone 16 series products, which enter the country through passenger baggage, do not change ownership.

"If there is evidence of trade, we are ready to disable it," he said. "It's easy to see if the phone is being used by the passport holder or not. Later, we will create a mechanism to search for it," he added.

Earlier, Febri said that from August to October, the Industry Ministry had recorded around 9,000 units of the iPhone 16 series that entered Indonesia through passenger luggage. According to Febri, these phones were entered legally by paying taxes.

"These phones entered legally but will become illegal if sold in Indonesia," Febri said, as quoted from a written release on Friday, October 25, 2024.

The government still prohibits the sale of the iPhone 16 as the Ministry of Industry has yet to issue a Domestic Component Level Certificate (TKDN) for the latest Apple products.

Febri also urged the public to report parties selling the iPhone 16 from passenger luggage. He explained that iPhone 16 falls under the category of post and telecommunications goods.

Therefore, it can only enter Indonesia through the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. This refers to Article 35 of Government Regulation No. 46 of 2021 on Post, Telecommunications and Broadcasting. "However, the quantity must not exceed two units per passenger."

In addition, Febri explained that the regulation also applies to personal belongings or items sent through postal operators that are used for personal and/or non-commercial purposes.
