TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Public Works is currently constructing temporary housing for the communities affected by flash floods and landslides in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The Directorate General of Strategic Infrastructure is carrying out this program with the support of state-owned construction companies (BUMN Karya) as part of post-disaster recovery efforts.

"The construction of temporary housing is in line with the guidance from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). Currently, the designated locations are in Aceh Tamiang and Bener Meriah. Priority is given to Aceh Tamiang as the land readiness has been fulfilled," said the Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo, as quoted in a written statement on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

According to data from the Ministry of Public Works as of December 28, 2025, the number of severely damaged houses in the three provinces reached 47,149 units. Out of this total, 29,542 units are being addressed through the construction of temporary housing, while the remaining 17,057 units are receiving Temporary Housing Waitlist assistance.

Dody stated that temporary housing is a primary need during the transition phase from emergency response to recovery. He emphasized that the Ministry of Public Works continues to coordinate with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to ensure the acceleration of the construction is in line with the guidance.

In the province of Aceh, the number of severely damaged houses is recorded at 38,169 units. The government is building 28,236 temporary housing units, which is about 74 percent of the total damage. Meanwhile, 9,996 units are assisted through the Temporary Housing Waitlist.

One of the locations for constructing temporary housing is at the DPRK Complex in Aceh Tamiang Regency. As of 11:00 AM on December 30, 2025, Dody mentioned that a housing block consisting of 12 modular units has entered the frame construction stage.

The installation of the roof and center wall panels is ongoing. The foundation for the second block is also complete, while the construction of the third block has begun. Seven blocks capable of accommodating 336 people are targeted to be fully established by January 2026.

Out of a total of 6,322 severely damaged houses in North Sumatra, 876 units of temporary housing have been constructed, covering approximately 14 percent. Dody mentioned that an additional 4,833 units received Temporary Housing Waitlist assistance. The construction progress is continually driven forward in accordance with land readiness and logistics in the field.

Meanwhile, in West Sumatra, there are 2,658 severely damaged houses. The government plans to build 430 temporary housing units, or about 16 percent. The remaining 2,228 units will be provided through the Temporary Housing Waitlist.

The temporary housing under construction is equipped with various support facilities, including a public kitchen, a washing area, a prayer room, and adequate sanitation facilities. These facilities are prepared to ensure the basic needs of the community during their sheltering period.

From a construction perspective, the temporary housing utilizes a modular system to ensure a fast and secure construction process. "The buildings are designed with light steel frames, cement boards, plywood floors, and zincalume roofs to guarantee strength, comfort, and habitability for the disaster-affected residents," said Dody.
