TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndelible ink, election ink, or voter ink plays a vital role in general elections in Indonesia, including today’s simultaneous regional election. Every voter who has cast their vote is obliged to dip their finger into the purple ink to mark their vote. Here are some facts about iconic indelible ink.

1. Originating in India, 1962

In 1962, India began using the symbolic purple ink on voters’ fingers during elections. The purpose is to prevent duplicate voting among eligible voters.

At that time, the Election Commission of India collaborated with the Ministry of Law, the National Physical Laboratory of India, and the National Research Development Corporation to agree on a partnership with Mysore Paint in procuring long-lasting and non-erasable ink.

This habit eventually spread to various countries, including Indonesia.

2. Long-lasting

Indelible ink has fairly long durability, lasting at least six hours after use. However, this ink is designed in such a way that prevents irritation or allergies to the skin.

3. Made from synthetic-natural materials

Based on General Election Commission Regulation Number 14 of 2023 concerning Voting Equipment, indelible ink is made from a mixture of synthetic or chemical materials and natural materials. Some of the materials used include 3-4 percent silver nitrate (AgNO3), aqua, gentian violet, gambir, turmeric, resin, as well as other mixed materials.

4. Specific requirements

The semi-permanent ink used in elections is designed to provide comfort and security for voters. This ink has been proven safe, as it does not cause allergies or irritation to the skin and can last for at least six hours.

The quality and security of election ink are guaranteed with a certification from the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), as well as testing of raw material composition carried out in government laboratories, state universities, or accredited private institutions.

Furthermore, this ink has also obtained a halal certificate from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). The indelible ink used is dark blue or dark purple in color, and two ink bottles are provided at each polling station for voters' needs.
