TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake that struck the Tanimbar region in Maluku province on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at 11:02 AM local time.
Following further analysis, BMKG updated the quake’s magnitude to 5.2. The epicenter was located at 6.84 degrees south latitude and 131.42 degrees east longitude, in the sea area near the Tanimbar Islands, at a depth of 69 kilometers.
“Based on the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, this was a moderate earthquake triggered by intra-slab activity of the Banda Plate,” said Daryono, BMKG’s Director of Earthquake and Tsunami, in a statement on Sunday.
He added that an analysis of the source mechanism showed the earthquake had a thrust fault mechanism.
BMKG’s shaking intensity map indicated that tremors were felt in Southeast Maluku Regency and the Tanimbar Islands Regency at an intensity of III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. At this level, shaking is generally felt indoors and is comparable to vibrations caused by a passing truck.
As of the latest update, there have been no reports of damage resulting from the earthquake. BMKG also confirmed that the quake did not have the potential to generate a tsunami.
Monitoring data up to 11:30 AM local time showed no aftershock activity.
