TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jatiluwih Village in Bali has been crowned one of the Best Tourism Villages 2024 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on Friday, November 15, 2024. The village was chosen as one of only 55 tourism villages globally to receive this recognition this year. These 55 villages were selected from 260 applications submitted by over 60 UN member states.
What makes Jatiluwih Village special? Here is a list of 7 facts about the Balinese village.
1. A Mountainside Paradise
As reported in the Jadesta page of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf), Jatiluwih Village is located in the Penebel District of Tabanan Regency, Bali. This village is situated on the slope of Mount Batukaru at an altitude of 685 meters above sea level. Jatiluwih thrives on agriculture, with red rice, coffee, durian, cassava, and taro being their prized local products.
2. Subak: A UNESCO-Recognized Legacy
Jatiluwih Village is renowned for its traditional irrigation system known as subak. This ingenious system, inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List on June 29, 2012, is rooted in the Hindu philosophy of Tri Hita Karana. This reflects the balance and harmony between humans, nature, and spirituality. Built in the 11th century, it transcends the role of a mere irrigation system, serving as a way of life built on sustainability and respect for the environment.
3. Rich in Flora and Fauna
Jatiluwih has a protected 24-hectare forest teeming with diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can spot rare birds and even the elusive Javanese slow loris while exploring the network of trails that wind through the lush forest and picturesque rice fields.
4. Cultural Tourism
Citing from Griyanta.pib.ac.id, Jatiluwih Village offers cultural tourism. One of the village's cultural gems is Pura Luhur Sri Rambut Sedana, a revered temple believed to bring prosperity, wealth, and fertility. The village also has Yeh Ho Waterfall in Banjar Gunung Sari Umah Kayu. Additionally, its terraced subak landscapes create a breathtaking panorama.
5. Okokan Tradition
A unique cultural tradition in Jatiluwih is the Okokan dance, typically performed by groups of 15 or more. This dance is reserved for special occasions, including mass cremations, and features dancers adorned in costumes made from dried banana leaves (Keraras), andong leaves, and white cloth. The Baris Memedi dancers evoke a sense of mystery with their eerie appearance.
6. Agrarian Life
Jatiluwih provides tourists with a window into the lives of locals and their traditional irrigation system. Beyond the breathtaking panorama of terraced rice fields, visitors get to interact directly with the wise and welcoming community. Moreover, they can go trekking through the verdant rice fields and learn the art of plowing the land.
7. Red Rice Delicacy
One of the flagship products of Jatiluwih Village is red rice. Different in aroma and taste from regular red rice, this local specialty is a must-try. Additionally, the village offers red rice tea as a souvenir for visitors to take home a piece of Jatiluwih's agricultural heritage.
