TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn in Yunnan Province on Sunday, a day after Cambodia and Thailand agreed to a ceasefire to halt deadly clashes along their border.
He also held a separate meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow at the same location.
In a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, as reported by Anadolu Agency, Wang said Beijing is ready to provide humanitarian assistance to Cambodia to assist with the care of civilians displaced by the conflict in the border area.
He stated that China continues to closely monitor the escalating situation and is committed to promoting a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
Wang urged Cambodia and Thailand to take gradual and measured steps to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire, restore normal interactions, rebuild trust, improve bilateral relations, and maintain regional peace and stability.
He also reiterated China's support for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to play its proper role and expressed Beijing's readiness to assist the ASEAN monitoring mission in overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Prak Sokhonn expressed his deep appreciation for China's active and constructive role in supporting the ceasefire with Thailand, according to a report by the official news agency Agence Kampuchea Presse.
He considered China's continued support crucial for the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire and the achievement of just and lasting peace.
During Wang's meeting with senior Thai diplomat Phuangketkeow, Thailand expressed its appreciation for China's role and understanding in supporting peace between Thailand and Cambodia, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok.
The statement noted that Thailand would consider the release of 18 Cambodian prisoners of war and hoped Cambodia would facilitate the repatriation of Thai citizens along the border.
During the meeting, Wang told his Thai counterpart that China least wants to see Thailand and Cambodia go to war and most hopes to see the two countries make peace, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Cambodia and Thailand signed a ceasefire agreement on Saturday, ending nearly 20 days of armed clashes along their disputed border.
The conflict killed dozens of people and forced nearly one million civilians to flee their homes.
Around 99 people have been reported killed since clashes resumed on December 8, a day after a border incident injured two Thai soldiers.
Thai authorities recorded 26 soldiers and one civilian killed in the fighting, while another 41 civilians died from “collateral damage” of the conflict. The Cambodian Ministry of Interior reported 31 Cambodian civilian deaths.
This latest ceasefire also aligns with a previous agreement that halted fighting for five days in July, which killed at least 48 people before collapsing in early December.
The July agreement was brokered by the United States, China, and Malaysia and formalized at a regional summit in Kuala Lumpur in October.
