TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahmadiyah congregation declares that it will still hold the jalsah salanah or annual meeting in Manis Lor Village, Jalaksana District, Kuningan Regency, West Java, despite being previously banned by the local government. Due to security reasons, the Kuningan government had earlier prohibited the event scheduled for December 6-8, 2024.
"We will not cancel or postpone this event," reads the official statement released by the Manislor Ahmadiyah Congregation on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
The congregation, comprised of hundreds of residents of Manis Lor, mentioned that the committee had spent a lot of money, energy, and thought. They aim to proceed with the event. They also claim that the Indonesian Ahmadiyah jalsah salanah has already obtained permission from the Manislor Village Chief.
In its stance statement, which also contains the members' signatures, the Manis Lor Ahmadiyah congregation requests local authorities and regulators to protect the event. "We appeal to all police officers and the regional leaders' coordination forum (Forkopimda) to protect our activities."
According to the official website of the Kuningan Regency Government, the decision to prohibit this Ahmadiyah congregation activity was made in a meeting attended by Forkopimda, religious figures, and community leaders. Acting Regent of Kuningan Agus Toyib stated that Ahmadiyah activities are prohibited, both within and outside the Kuningan area, to maintain a conducive situation.
"We, as the Kuningan Regency Government, do not allow and prohibit the jalsah salanah activity," said Agus in a statement on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
On the other hand, civil organizations, including the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), West Java Society Forum for Tolerance (Formassi), Bandung Legal Aid Institute (LBH), and Inter-Religious Workers Network (Jakatarub), condemn the actions of the Kuningan Regional Government. They urge President Prabowo Subianto, Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, Acting Governor of West Java Ney Machmudin, and all civil society elements to guarantee the freedom to gather and practice religion for the Ahmadiyah congregation.
"As well as revoke the unconstitutional decision of the Kuningan Forkopimda," said YLBHI chairman Muhammad Isnur in a written statement on December 4.
According to Isnur, the banning and threat of demolition against the jalsah salanah is contrary to the constitution and violates human rights provisions. He said the government should mediate the alleged rejection from the public towards Ahmadiyah congregation activities.
YLBHI and several other civil organizations urge the Kuningan Regional Government to highlight tolerance values and human rights principles by protecting Ahmadiyah's annual meeting in Manis Lor Village. They also call on President Prabowo, the Ministry of Religion, and the Ministry of Home Affairs to take action against government officials who reject the Ahmadiyah annual forum. Tempo attempted to contact Isnur on Thursday night, December 5, 2024, to inquire about the progress of this issue but received no response until this article was published.
