Apple Reportedly Applies for Investment of Rp158 Billion in Indonesia, Ready to Build Factory in Bandung

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple reportedly plans to pour nearly Rp158 billion in investments in Indonesia. This step is taken to increase the production of Apple components and accessories domestically, which will pave the way for Apple to meet the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirements and lift the ban on the sale of the latest iPhone series in Indonesia.

As reported by Antara, an investment of Rp158 billion involves plans to establish a production facility in Bandung, West Java. The factory will operate through a collaboration between Apple and several registered local suppliers. This location is chosen to become a center for producing Apple accessories and components.

This step is part of Apple's efforts to fulfill the TKDN requirements mandated by the Indonesian government. The regulation stipulates that electronic products, including cell phones and tablets, must have a local content of 40 percent to circulate in the domestic market.

If Apple succeeds in meeting TKDN requirements, the government will lift the ban on the sale of the iPhone 16 and open access for the product in the Indonesian market. Currently, the iPhone 16 available in Indonesia is only for personal use of international passengers, while official sales in the country are not allowed.

Apple's investment proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Industry, which is currently reviewing the proposal. However, according to an unnamed source, this investment plan is not yet final and may change as needed.

Neither Apple nor the Ministry of Industry has responded to this news. However, Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza expressed his hope that Apple will truly show its commitment.

"We hope that the current commitment presented (Apple's investment plan worth 10 million US dollars) can be executed as soon as possible," said Faisol in a meeting in Jakarta, Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

He also admitted that they have contacted Apple to discuss this investment plan in more detail. However, he considered that Apple still falls short of the commitments agreed upon previously. "Basically, we are currently evaluating, it will be announced by the Minister soon," he said.

Previously, Apple has stated its commitment to invest in Indonesia in the form of innovation development, which is manifested through the establishment of Apple Academy in Indonesia. Until now, Apple has only realized investments of around Rp1.48 trillion from a total commitment of Rp1.71 trillion.
