TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel started launching attacks against Syria on Sunday, December 8, 2024, following the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad by armed opposition forces within the country. Israeli forces continued to advance into Syrian territory, seizing land near the Golan Heights, while its air force conducted aerial bombardments across the nation.

This Israeli military action drew immediate condemnation from several Arab nations, including Qatar, Iraq, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, as well as Hamas.

Qatar

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Monday, denouncing Israel's attack as "a dangerous development and a blatant attack on Syria’s sovereignty and unity as well as a flagrant violation of international law."

The statement, cited by Al Jazeera, further asserted that "the policy of imposing a fait accompli pursued by the Israeli occupation, including its attempts to occupy Syrian territories, will lead the region to further violence and tension."

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia also condemned Israel's actions on Monday, stating that they confirm "Israel’s continued violation of the rules of international law and its determination to sabotage Syria’s chances of restoring its security, stability and territorial integrity".

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs called upon the international community to condemn Israel's campaign, emphasizing that the Golan Heights are occupied Arab territories.

Egypt

Egypt denounced Israel's "further occupation of Syrian land" and viewed Israel's military incursion into the buffer zone as an attempt to establish a new reality on the ground, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

Iraq

Baghdad echoed these condemnations, stating that Israel had committed a "grave violation under international law".

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs "stresses the importance of maintaining Syria’s sovereignty and integrity and calls on the UN Security Council to uphold its responsibility and condemn this aggression … and put an end to it."

Hamas

Hamas also strongly condemned "repeated acts of aggression by the Israeli occupation against Syrian territories" and rejected "Zionist ambitions or plans targeting Syria".

United Nations

The recent Israeli land seizure was also denounced by UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, who stated that the move was a "violation" of the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria.

The UN peacekeeping forces deployed in the Golan Heights, known as UNDOF, "informed the Israeli counterparts that these actions would constitute a violation of the 1974 disengagement agreement," said Dujarric. He added that Israeli forces remained present in three locations within the zone.
