TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Attorney General ST Burhanuddin denies the allegations, saying that the naming of former Trade Minister Tom Lembong as a suspect was done for political interests. He also mentioned that designating someone as a suspect is not an easy matter.
"We are only legal and that's what we have. It is not easy to declare someone as a suspect," Burhanuddin said during a working meeting with the House's Commission III at the Nusantara II Building of the Indonesian House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
Burhanuddin also conveyed that they have gone through a strict process and stages in designating Tom Lembong as a suspect in the alleged corruption case of sugar imports. "It is impossible for us to designate another person as a suspect without following a process. This violates Human Rights," he said.
He assured that the team of the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) handled the sugar import case carefully.
Meanwhile, a member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Rudianto Lalo, emphasized that law enforcement must be carried out with the principles of justice. He mentioned that Tom Lembong's case seemed to have been fabricated.
"This raises the public perception, is this purely law enforcement or is it a requested case?" Rudianto asked the attorney general.
On October 29, Tom Lembong, the former trade minister in the era of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi (2015-2016), underwent a 10-hour interrogation at the Attorney General's Office after being named a suspect for allegedly issuing sugar import permits during his tenure as trade minister. The Attorney General's Office also suspects that the state lost Rp 400 billion as a result of the case.
In addition to Tom Lembong, the Attorney General's Office has named another suspect in the sugar import corruption case. He is the Business Development Director of PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (PT PPI), Charles Sitorus.
In addition to being the Business Development Director, Charles also holds the position of Independent Commissioner of PT PLN (Persero). The Attorney General suspects that both Tom and Charles are involved in a corruption case involving the import of 105 tons of raw crystal sugar during that period.
However, Tom Lembong has filed a pre-trial lawsuit against his suspect naming. His legal representative, Ari Yusuf Amir, said that the designation of Tom Lembong as a suspect was full of irregularities.
"The designation of Thomas Trikasih Lembong as a suspect is not based on sufficient preliminary evidence, which is at least two pieces of evidence as required by the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP)," Ari said.
