TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Singapore Police Force arrested an Australian man on Thursday, December 12, 2024, after he allegedly set fire to curtains within the waiting area of Terminal 2 at Changi Airport.
According to a police statement, officers responded to reports of a disturbance caused by a male passenger within the terminal at approximately 2:15 am. The man reportedly verbally abused Airport Police Division officers after being denied cigarettes.
Before the police arrived, the man proceeded to pull down curtains from the area and ignite them using a lighter. Although the fire was quickly extinguished by police officers, the man further escalated the situation by spraying a fire extinguisher at the officers before being apprehended.
The 33-year-old Australian tourist faces serious charges for his actions. The damage caused by the fire is estimated to be approximately S$1,000, or approximately Rp11.9 million.
As reported by ABC, the Singapore Police Force stressed that it treated all security threats seriously and “will not hesitate to take action against anyone who causes public alarm with false threats.”
The man is expected to be charged with mischief by fire with intent to cause damage, an offense punishable under Section 435 of the Penal Code with a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment, a fine, or both. He was subsequently remanded to the Institute of Mental Health in Singapore for evaluation and is scheduled to return to court on December 27.
Investigations are ongoing to determine if the man may be involved in any other criminal offenses.
This incident follows a similar incident in November 2024, where another Australian man was charged with two counts of using threatening words that caused panic. This individual, while boarding a flight at Changi Airport on November 23, made threats to bring down the aircraft. He was then removed from the flight and continued to make the same threats while waiting in the terminal.
Under Singapore's Protection from Harassment Act, those found guilty of using threatening words that cause alarm are liable to a fine of up to S$5,000, or approximately Rp59 million.
Changi Airport, renowned for its exceptional facilities, including duty-free shopping, luxurious accommodations, and automated check-in services, was recently recognized as the world's best airport in a survey conducted by the British newspaper The Telegraph.
